Gargi Banerji Founder, PRAGYA
Gargi Banerji is a founding member of the NGO PRAGYA, which carries out development projects to benefit marginalised and impoverished communities in Asia and Africa.
Gargi’s career spans more than 25 years of experience in research, development and consulting and straddles both the corporate and development sectors. An MBA from a premier business school in India, Gargi began her career working as a Management Consultant with Tata Consultancy Services, with assignments for the corporate sector, government and the development sector. In 1995, she co-founded PRAGYA dedicated to addressing development issues of remote and difficult areas in the world and improving lives at the last-mile. As Director of PRAGYA, she has shaped it into an organisation of repute, with a diversified portfolio and several impactful and internationally-recognised innovations. PRAGYA has benefited more than 400,000 people in several disadvantaged communities in India, Nepal and Kenya, providing them with services in education, health, livelihoods, energy, water & sanitation, and others, carried out humanitarian services reaching out to thousands of disaster-affected people, and has also made significant contributions to policies.
Gargi has been conferred with the Whitley Award for Conservation and the MSDS Award for Social Entrepreneurs, and under her leadership, PRAGYA has won the Energy Globe Award and the STARS Impact Award. Apart from her role on the Pragya Board, she continues to provide advice to the State and the development sector and write on issues as diverse as climate change, child labour, technology divide, disaster management and gender inequity.
