Mr. Paul Polman, the 2015 Philanthropreneurship Prize is changing what it means to be a corporate leader.
“When I think of philanthropreneurs, one remarkable leader comes to mind. Forward thinking, passionate and unwavering, Mr. Polman is leading transformational change in the way we think about corporate and personal responsibility”. These were the words addressed by His Excellency Amr Al-Dabbagh to celebrate Mr Paul Polman’s outstanding leadership at the 2015 Philanthropreneurship Forum.
As the CEO of Unilever, Mr. Paul Polman is crafting new forms of collaboration and engagement between business and social good. Determined to make companies aware of their mission to solve problems in society, he works courageously to convince business leaders to embrace sustainable corporate practices. “We need to understand that there is no business case in enduring poverty”, he affirmed just before receiving the Prize.
Mr. Paul Polman is actively engaged in pushing this mindset forward. “The system we have created is leaving too many people behind”, he declared to an audience of attentive philanthropreneurs. “Increasingly, we are facing the tipping point where the cost of not acting is becoming higher than the cost of acting”. And insisted that business can be done differently.
Giving more visibility to the positive correlation between corporate social responsibility and a strong financial performance. Leveraging the idea that sustainability is also good for corporations, Mr Polman insisted. “We need to stop running our businesses for the shareholders only. We of course need to satisfy them, but we don’t run the business only for them”, he added.
As promptly outlined by His Excellency, “A champion of long term thinking, Mr. Paul Polman has disrupted the status quo of public companies by rejecting the short sighted cycles of quarterly reporting”. “This philanthropreneur offers his influence, knowledge and resources for the greater good – including his own sweat and tears.”
